hey band.

i really don't know how many of you visit this blog. but i hope we changed the skin and attitude in band to show something. we mean business about band this year. No BM has ever grown a pair and screamed at the whole band. moving back, and forth with instruments, all sweaty and tired. it ain't pretty.

let's just do our best as we step into the SYF season this year. it's a new attitude in band, and a new attitude we want to see in everyone. push yourselves guys. you guys can do it.

Hi everyone,

This is haocheng, it had been a long year, and another year together as a band for us ,good job guys, my batch taking over the leadership positions of the band, our sec 2s are getting more focused on their goals in band and are much more serious, and the new members of the band, you guys are going to be seniors to the next batch of sec 1s, maintain you passion for Raffles Institution Military Band ^^, and make sure that you guys behave yourselves like how seniors should be.....humhum....

Well, 2011 is a SYF year and we, the coming batch of Sec4s will be very serious about this and we are going to set the rules straight, i suppose there would be additional practices, i am not using the word extra because it is not a practice that is extra, it is necessary...

let me share a story....

a few days ago, i walked passed the main atrium, and i found the heritage room, or whatever it is open, due to my curiosity, i walked in and i saw a set of our old band uniform on one side of the room, while there was a set of rugby team shirt on the other side.

i also found some old photos and one photo had a caption that really left me wondering, in pride and in shame, well not exactly shame, not so bad....IT says: RIMB - The pride of the school

Looking at what we are doing now, are we behave like we are the pride of the school? Can we be called the pride of the school? Are we considering ourselves to be the pride of the school? Answer these with you heart and think about your Rafflesian Values and qualities!

I can tell you that even my answer is only partially yes.

Hey, i am sorry i sounded so serious, but it is a very serious problem that we are facing, we are not showing ourselves respect, the showing the school respect and not showing our seniors respect, by not do up to standard, and surpass it.

everyone outside would have expectations for us, Raffles Institution Military Band, what is this? This is the Band of Raffles Institution, Raffles, THis tells, dont you think so?

If others expect you to be good, then you must expect yourselves to be better than good...

It would be a new year after this post and i hope that we will have a new beginning, a new life, rebirth of our band, starting we our members maturing mentally and understand the importance and significance of coming for Band practice and treating band practice seriously.

this is the heritage of Raffles Institution Military Band, the legacy---a continuous gold trend of 34 years (if i am not wrong) and a lot of best display band award and best drum major award...

2 years ago, we officially ended our SYF gold award trend, trust me, the sec3s want to get the Gold With Honours more than anyone in the band now.

(if this offends anyone, i am sorry ok, because i did not communicate with anyone on my thoughts and if it is alright to publish these on a blog)

We lost it, we want to get it back so much, sometimes i can just be doing homework or something and just suddenly thought of band and suddenly, tears will fill my eyes. Guys, lets work hard for SYF 2011, to stand up from where we fell down and continue our band journey with our heads held up high with pride.

hello everybody!

hope band's going fine for everyone, but even to me as I stand at the back behind my instrument I can't help but notice that the attendance is really low. There's up to only 1 to 2 trombones, and one time i remember there was only trumpets. I don't know, is it because everyone's overseas? Not many, right? I remember at attendance taking the reason why many people was because they were 'ponning', and that's kinda screwed. xD

Hello everyone.

I'm sure many of us were shocked when we heard the announcer said this -

Raffles Institution: SILVER

As much as this isn't really the colour that we want, I hope that everybody realizes that life isn't just about the results. Many times it's the journey that bonds us together that really counts... I hope that we will start to encourage and comfort one another, especially our batch mates who will go through thick and thin with us in the band for four years.

To those who feel depressed, please know that you are not alone. We are all in this together and we will go through these times together. Please also know that there are people who truly care about you and who truly love you, so take comfort in that fact. If you ask me, I rather get Silver with all my close friends where we love one another rather than get a Gold with people who hates and distrusts one another. If you really feel depressed, I suggest you talk to some of your batchmates that you trust because we all went through this together.

I honestly hope that through this experience, we begin to appreciate one another even more. That's what friends are for.

Yes. The day we've been practicing for since last october is tomorrow.

Checklist for tomorrow:

1. Play your hearts out

2. Enjoy yourself

3. Do what you have practiced to do

4. Make the audience enjoy our performance.

Do all this tomorrow, and we will surely win our audience hearts, we will surely, know that they thoroghly enjoyed what we played. Our real prizes at the end of the day is the audience loving our performance, and us taking away the invaluable and unexplainable, amazing experience, of play SYF'09 together, as RIMB'09.

We're gonna get the gold with honours, cuz we're the band of brothers.

HEY EVERYONE,

ITS TMRW.

yeah. syf is tmrw already.

firstly, like what everyone has said many times before, i think that we shouldnt look at this as a competition where we will be judged based on the medal we get, but as a performance where we as a band will entertain the audience with our music. we shouldnt have the mindset that this syf will prove our standard or anything to others: we all know how hard we have worked and how far we have progressed as a band and i dont think we have to prove anything to anyone.

i think more than the medal than we receive, how we react and how we continue in band life after the results are announced is what really defines us as a band. are we just a SYF band where everyone only comes when there is SYF coming up or are we one RIMB whose only passion is for making music and awards are only incentives?

finally,

i think most importantly we must enjoy ourselves tmrw on stage and play our hearts out. this will be the last secondary school SYF for my batch and the sec4s and for the sec2s, you all can learn a lot from this SYF and lead the band at the next SYF in two years time.

just think about it;

tmrw at SYF is probably the last time ever we will be able to perform Die Fledermaus and Overture No. 1 as a band. will we want to have a good impression of performing it well forever, or regret not being able to perform it well after months of hard practice?

oh well, most importantly, tmrw we all must

Hey everybody,

Actually what I've wanted to say has already been said, on this blog.

There's still some more I feel like saying.

When we talk about all the other bands getting bad prizes and what nots, I just realised today that other bands getting other prizes dosen't matter. They're not us. Although they're results might affect how the judges think about our performance, remember getting the award is not the objective of the SYF. Our real award is the audience on that day really enjoying our performance, and when they go out of the concert hall, they can say they really enjoyed our performance.

Personally, when I go out there, ready to play, I'm just gonna imagine that the judges are just a part of our audience, and what I want to really do is make them enjoy our music. That's the real objective of us playing that day. Even when people call it a competition, I call it a concert.

It might be lame, but its true. That's what I'm gonna do on the 8th. The judges aren't even there. It's just the audience.

Hi all!

I am going to post about some of the (more general) things that the 'tutors' have taught me, and maybe all of us can apply the lessons I've learnt from them.

1) We have to be responsible to ourselves and the band.
> If everyone plays marcato and just one person plays a slight bit longer and doesn't end with everybody, the judges will count is as "not together". There's a difference between if a person plays 0.875 and 0.9 of the crotchet, and we must all play together in tuning, intonation, note length to really impress the judges. After all, weren't you impressed when you heard the japanese band playing with such unity? So we have to be responsible to the band and not be so selfish.

2) When a sacrifice must be made, a sacrifice must be made.
> When our 'tutor' asks Zi Hao not to play at some crucial parts where the saxophone section would be very exposed(such as F of the set piece or J of the choice piece), he said that it's 3 days towards SYF and we should sacrifice if need be - because if one player were to screw up, it will make the whole thing quite screwed up. At this point of time, we cannot take risks already, so we have to think our sacrifice made as for the better good of the band. I hope that this makes sense, especially to those who feel sad if they are being cut for some parts already.

3) If you want to slack, if you want to do your homework and mugging, please do it after four days time where you would have months to do it.
> The above sentence were the (almost) exact words that our 'tutor' said. In a 2.4 run, at the very last 100m you give your all and sprint(or at least I do) because I know that no matter how tired I am now, I can just relax all I want after that last sprint. I know that if I do not sprint, I may regret it if I miss the grade by a few seconds... What we can do now we must do - so that we all won't regret it if we miss the mark by a few points just because we choose not to make our final sprint.

I hope that the above 3 important lessons that I've learnt really inspire all of you, because it inspired me. I know that everyone is tired already(because I know I am), coming back for all the extra practices, but this is the last sprint for everybody. So let's sprint with all our might, and then after SYF maybe we can have a massive outing (can go watch movies, play bowling, play LAN etc.) to celebrate our hard work!

hello everyone,

this is a desperate attempt to save the blog from dying:D

okay actually i think prac today was pretty good especially with all the tutors from NTU coming down to help us.

and i think that even though some of us may feel very sian for having to prac like 4 or more days a week, we should just chiong from now till syf and put our heart and soul into it!

i mean, think about it: if we dont give syf our all and we hear the result "Rimb: bronze/silver/an award we are not happy with", then all we can do is just regret that we didnt try harder. however, if we prac as hard as we can from now till wednesday, i believe that even if we get bronze we may be a bit disappointed at first but we will never regret the bonding and fun we had as a band preparing for SYF '09, and this is one of the experiences that we will never forget years after we graduate from the band.

Therefore lets put our heart and soul into these next few days and chiong towards the finish line together as a band. everytime we feel sian from the practicing or the schoolwork or the pressure we have on us, just remember not all our efforts will not go unrewarded and it is the experience and journey we had together as a band that counts!

I realize it's all(mostly) the sec4s posting but this is a band blog, not a batch09 blog! so i shall break this little trend. (since I'm tired of doing my hw)

To my batch: I hope that we will start to work towards a more bonded batch. I mean - who remembered Sheng Siong's birthday on the 25th February(i noe it past like more than one month ago) or Zi Heng's birthday or Jun Jie's birthday or maybe even June Hong's birthday yesterday? And how many of us celebrates even our batchmates birthdays? Last year, only me, kenneth and irvin celebrated Philemon's birthday (with an attempt to smash cake in his face). I don't expect us to be super bonded (like the J1 batch who always go out together as a whole batch) but at least we should try to start to make efforts to bond together. Like send happy birthday smses to our batchmates or maybe even send a gift to him. I really sincerely hope that we can lead the band in a few months time as a bonded batch, not just as individuals.

So let's start - ask yourself, do you know who's birthday in our batch is coming up? If you don't (I admit even I don't know some of the batchmates birthdays) so I shall put up a list here:

hello band, pls rest well and eat/drink well to recover from the gruelling 15 hours prac we had in the two days. it's really beneficial, i can definitely see the improvements we have made. we need to work on togetherness and tuning to sound richer and more harmonic. we can make it, defnitely. it's our stage, our performance and our afternoon on 8th april, 2.30pm at singapore conference hall. no1 is going to take that away. dont let them. i wish you all the best for your projects tests assignments you have, everyone is quite screwed for them xD

hello all, today was the first saturday prac and will ~~continue throughout the year~~ last until after SYF. as we can all see it's very useful as we have like 5 hours full concert though uhh i was guilty of wanting it to end (i got ulcer okay!) future pracs would be productive too and we will go into SYF prepared heh =D

there'd be more runthroughs in the few weeks to come, eventually there will be prac everyday (like 2 years ago) culminating into our performance day @ SCH. the balloting is super near like 3 days away :S so yea better hope for a date that's advantageous to us man.

HEY GUYS!

First post from me!

Firstly I'd like to say that YEAH PRAC YESTERDAY WAS GOOD. THOUGH SIAN AT TIMES BUT I LIKED IT REALLY.

Though *ahem* Johnson's announcement was aimed purely at me. Of which I have a great regret of falling asleep cuz well I usually fall asleep in class anyway. *ahem*

Secondly, I'd like to remind all you guys who actually read this place, that we cannot count on hope and prayers alone. Actually this goes out to everyone luh. I hope that with this er... experience we will all become more bonded (hey thats they crux of a band eh?). This is not my part to say but I'd largely encourage you guys to start bonding between the batch like my dearest batch has (lol sounds gay).

Thirdly, PRACTISE! er... we need more of that yea? Hoping that everyone can come down during the extra pracs and practice their own parts! If Kirk allows and there's enough people we might actually get a chance to rehearse as a band instead of just individuals which is incomplete without concert prac.

So yeah~! Have a great last 2 hours of your e-Learning days. Heck. I haven't started on my homework myself XD

hey peeps, just like say good job for today's prac we know that it's quite tiring and draining, having a full day prac. but hey, did you actually catch that glimps of smile on mr oura's face? (: he's starting to enjoy making music and not just correcting our mistakes.

we've come a long way from what we were last year. today's concert prac showed how we SHOULD at least sound like to be a band, and let's all work hard for a common good. hopefully, we'll have an exponential growth like that in 07 and be ready. who knows what we can get at SYF if we keep on improving =D ? i'll seeya all, have good rest and do your elearning hw XD

Ok, here comes the stuff that I, being a secretary, have to do:

NEXT BAND PRACTICE: MONDAY, 23rd FEB (9am - 5pm)

There will be lunch in between, please bring some lunch money along too.

Lol, let's have band lunch and spam the whole of McDonalds or something. Or maybe we can get McDelivery. Or a few boxes of pizza. Who knows?

Oh by the way, for those who think that you are gonna be screwed by homework due to staff training days ~~(and the long band practice)~~, please express your deep-felt gratitude at the tagboard!

Actually, even if you are not getting screwed, just post at tagboard anyways.

We don't want a dead tagboard, get it?
